How to Treat Hair Loss Naturally

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

Hair loss can be a devastating experience for any man or woman. So much so, that it can lead to anxiety or depression. There are many types of hair loss and one should note there’s a difference between hair loss and hair shedding. Hair shedding is the natural process by which we lose hair. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology says the average person sheds 50 to 100 hairs per day! However, when this hair loss becomes excessive, and hair does not grow back, this is no longer considered shedding, but it could be a sign of “hair loss”. A common term used in the industry for hair loss is “alopecia”.

Common Types of Alopecia

There are five main forms of Alopecia:

Androgenic alopecia – This type of alopecia can occur for both men and women. Men who are diagnosed with this condition tend to start losing their hair around the temples and at the top crown portion of their head. Women unfortunately experience this type of hair loss all over. When parting the hair for styling, hair parts start to appear wider and hair becomes thinner in general all over the scalp. Genes and the environment tend to play a role in androgenic alopecia. Increased levels of a hormone called androgens in hair follicles can lead to shorter hair growth cycles. If hair strands do appear, their growth is shorter than normal with thinner strands of hair.

Alopecia areata – This type of alopecia is identified by the “patchy” bald areas that are seen not only on the scalp, but different areas of the body as well. The American Academy of Dermatology has classified this type of hair loss as an autoimmune disease. Alopecia areata causes the immune system to attack hair follicles by mistake. This type of alopecia can occur at any age in one episode or throughout one’s life. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for Alopecia areata, but it can be treated medically. Some dermatologist may recommend one of the following treatments: (1) Injections of corticosteroids, (2) Minoxidil, (3) Corticosteroids you apply, or (4) Anthralin. Traction alopecia – This form of alopecia is common when continuous stress is put on the hair by pulling or stretching. As the hair follicle becomes overstressed, small bumps may start to appear on the scalp. When hair is worn in tight braids, dreadlocks, ponytails, weaves and more, this causes damage to one’s hair follicles over time. If this stress continues to persist, permanent hair loss can occur in these areas, especially along hair edges. Researchers recommend switching and rotating less stressful hairstyles.

Alopecia totalis – This is an advance form of alopecia, characterized by complete loss of hair on the scalp. Alopecia totalis can begin as alopecia areata, with small patches of hair loss. If patches continue to spread, one could become completely bald. Researchers are not exactly sure what causes alopecia totalis, however experts and doctors do know this condition is tied to an immune system problem.

Cicatricial alopecia – Cicatricial is an inflammatory form of alopecia that causes scarring and permanent hair loss. Damage can occur from burns, infections and hair follicles are replaced by scar tissue (called fibrosis). As scar tissue starts to form, permanent hair loss forms in the area. To diagnose if you have this form of alopecia, it is often recommended to have a clinical exam with a biopsy of tissue from this area.
