What is Hydrosol? Your Hair & Skin Will Love Them!

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

TDM Essential Oils is a huge proponent and supporter of hydrosols. Many people are familiar with essential oils; however, few really know about hydrosols. What are hydrosols? Perhaps this is your first-time hearing about a hydrosol. To explain what hydrosols are, we must first understand how essential oils are made.

Essential Oils Vs Hydrosols

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile, aromatic compounds of a plant, and they are usually extracted through steam distillation. To create an essential oil, traditionally flowers, herbs and other plants must be gathered and placed over a boiler to extract the oils. The distiller will place these plants inside of a vat and boil water underneath them. The boiler heats water into steam, and that steam is injected inside of the vat at a very low pressure. Over time the heat from the steam causes the glands within plants to secrete an oil. To collect that extracted oil, distillers will run cold water into a pipe running through the distiller, landing in a storage container. As the mixture is allowed to rest, the oil rises to the top and separates from the water, unveiling essential oil! Some distillers may run their product through additional filtration processes before it is sold. Now that we've discussed essential oils, let's focus in on hydrosols.

Hydrosols are aromatic waters produced by steam distillation. The cold water that was used during distilling to extract the essential oil is considered "flower water" or a hydrosol. If you recall from the essential oil process explained above, water and oil separate from each other after steam is applied. TDM Essentials has gone a step above this process and partnered directly with a distiller who only processes flowers, herbs, and other plants with the intention of creating the hydrosol. This means they are distilled with FRESH organic plant material, on copper stills, under constant supervision for true therapeutic waters.

This partnership guarantees TDM's Hydrosols are higher quality, more than just "water left-overs". The curation of these hydrosols has a lot of therapeutic benefits for our hair, skin, and body!

TDM's Hydrosol Collection

TDM's Hydrosol Collection comes in a variety of beautiful scents and are carefully crafted to support smells with varying benefits. Hydrosols are more delicate than essential oils, however they contain all the valuable properties of the plant. Hydrosols are gentle and effective on the skin and hair care products. TDM’s Hydrosol Collection is also an excellent complement to our hair serum collection. These are very different than traditional hair sprays, which may contain synthetic oils, fillers, or other chemicals. TDM's hydrosols are all-organic, curated directly from plants. Since each product is carefully crafted to maintain its original benefits, it is suitable to use at all ages and is not gender specific. TDM's premier Hydrosol Collection includes the following 4 hydrosols with more to be added as various herbs come into season:

Our Hydrosols are free of any non-organic materials and preservatives. Each product is sold in glass bottles and should be kept in glass bottles to maintain the product's integrity. We highly recommend refrigerating your hydrosols upon receipt to extend the shelf life of your product.

Each hydrosol can be used on wet or dry hair without weighing your hair down. Upon application, the minerals within the hydrosol can nourish your scalp, hair, pores and more!
